Grand Canyon West vs South Rim at a glance
Both sides look onto the same canyon, but they are not neighbors. Grand Canyon West is a Hualapai business on the tribe's own land. The South Rim belongs to Grand Canyon National Park. Each has its own tickets, rules and opening times, and the two are a long drive apart.
From Las Vegas, the West Rim is the shorter trip. If you are choosing between the two for a single day from Las Vegas, start with the Las Vegas day trips or the Grand Canyon West tickets. For a trip with several days at the canyon, the South Rim is the natural second stop.

What you do at Grand Canyon West
The sights are concentrated on three points.
The Skywalk
A horseshoe-shaped glass bridge at Eagle Point. It is included with the All-Access Pass and not with General Admission. Read the Skywalk guide for shoes, lockers and photo rules.
Eagle Point and Guano Point
Eagle Point has the Native American Village and a view of the eagle-shaped rock. Guano Point has a hike with no railing and the remains of an old cable system. See Guano Point and Eagle Point.
The river
A helicopter landing with a pontoon boat starts at the rim. A raft trip starts in Peach Springs. See helicopter tours and rafting.
Zipline and arcade
The All-Access Pass lists the zipline, subject to availability, and an arcade. The zipline runs at Hualapai Point and depends on weather.

One canyon, two roads
Do not treat the West Rim as a detour from the South Rim. The drive between them takes 4 to 5 hours, so most travelers choose one side per day.
Which rim fits your trip
Pick by time and style.
One day from Las Vegas
Choose Grand Canyon West. The drive is about 2 to 2.5 hours each way, and a coach or flight can do the planning. Start early because the park opens at 8:00 a.m.
A road trip through Arizona
Combine both if you have the days. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the drive between them. The Route 66 guide covers Kingman and Peach Springs, two towns near the West Rim.
Hiking and a longer stay
The South Rim is the better base for trail days. After the flood of 29 August 2026, inner canyon areas such as Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch were affected by closures. Those closures do not apply to Grand Canyon West. Check the park's current notices before you plan a hike there.
Heat and season
Summer is hot at the West Rim and the monsoon brings afternoon storms from mid-June to the end of September. The weather guide shows the months side by side. The South Rim guide has its own pages on the best time to visit.
