The drive step by step

The route follows US-93 toward Kingman, then turns onto Pierce Ferry Road. From there you drive Diamond Bar Road, then Buck and Doe Road and Airport Service Road to the terminal. Many drivers cross into Arizona on the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge by Hoover Dam. A stop at the dam itself is a detour; read about the Hoover Dam bypass bridge if you want to plan one. Check current traffic and roadworks before you leave.

The main access roads are paved and suit cars, motorcycles, coaches and RVs. Do not confuse Diamond Bar Road with Diamond Creek Road, which is the unpaved road used for rafting trips from Peach Springs.

If your route runs through Kingman, know that roadworks continue at the I-40 and US-93 interchange. A new tunnel is open, but there are lane restrictions and day and night work, with completion expected in 2027. Old Route 66 stops are described in our Route 66 guide.

Parking and the free shuttle

Grand Canyon West is open daily, including holidays, from 8:00 a.m. The last ticket sale is at 4:30 p.m. and closing at 6:00 p.m., with 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in summer. Check the posted times for your date. Our weather page has the details.

Fuel, water and the desert road

Fill your tank before you leave the highway. Fuel stations are at US-93 and Pierce Ferry Road and in Dolan Springs. Emergency fuel at the West Rim is available only on request, so do not count on a regular station on site.

The road crosses open desert. Carry water, take heat seriously in summer and tell someone your plan if you travel alone. In winter, check the weather before you leave Las Vegas. Arizona does not use daylight saving time, and Grand Canyon West does not change its clocks.

For most first-time visitors without a rental car, the guided bus tour is the simplest way to get there and back. With a car, the drive is straightforward and gives you your own timing. Take the plane or helicopter if you want the aerial view, but a landing by the river does not by itself include the Skywalk, so check the package. More on the flights is in our helicopter tours guide.

At the entrance: what to bring

Entry is checked. Outside food, large bags, coolers and standard backpacks with two shoulder straps are not allowed, and small bags are sometimes allowed after a security check. Drones and weapons are not allowed on the reservation. A National Park Service pass does not cover entry here.

A self-drive day visit needs no reservation. Overnight stays, rafting and tours with transport do. If you are coming from the other side of the canyon, the South Rim is roughly 4 to 5 hours away, and the South Rim access guide covers that side. Our West Rim and South Rim comparison helps you choose.
