Grand Canyon West weather at a glance
The West Rim lies in the high desert of northwest Arizona, far from the national park. Summers are hot, winters are cool with frosty nights, and thunderstorms arrive in the monsoon season. Weather can also stop attractions for a while, so it affects your ticket choice. See our guide to Grand Canyon West tickets and packages before you pick a day.
The monthly figures below are for Kingman, in the same part of Arizona. They are a regional guide and not a measurement taken at the Skywalk, because the rim and the river bottom differ from town.

Our pick: afternoon entry
If the morning is lost to weather or travel, this ticket is valid from 3 pm and still covers the Skywalk and the shuttle to the viewpoints.

Best time to visit Grand Canyon West
The monthly numbers point to spring and autumn as the milder seasons. April and October have highs of 75°F and 79°F (24°C and 26°C), while June to August stay between 95°F and 99°F (35°C to 37°C). May is also dry on average. Winter days are cool, with nights near or below freezing from December to February.
For most visitors, April, May and October are the easiest months for a day on the rim. Come in winter if you want cooler days and dress in layers. Summer works, but you need an early start, shade breaks and plenty of water. Midday is also the busiest time at the Skywalk, from 11:00 to 15:00.
If you are choosing between the two rims, the South Rim has its own conditions, covered in the South Rim weather guide. For other parts of the state, see the best time to visit Arizona.
Summer heat and the monsoon
Extreme heat, lightning, strong wind, dust storms and flash floods are all regional risks. The National Weather Service defines the monsoon as June 15 to September 30. Moisture often reaches northern Arizona only in early July, and storms usually build in the afternoon or evening. Do not expect rain every day or a fixed schedule for storms.
Take heat warnings seriously, because they change how you plan the day. Drink water often, wear a hat, avoid the long walks at midday and never leave children or pets in a parked car. Afternoon storms can end an outdoor day early, so book your Skywalk time in the morning when you can. For help with timing, see the Skywalk guide.

Winter at the West Rim
From December to February, the Kingman figures show lows around 30°F to 33°F (-1°C to 1°C). Wind, lightning, heavy rain or snow can pause attractions for a time. Bring a jacket for the exposed viewpoints and keep the next section in mind: the hours change.
If you plan to drive in winter, check road and weather conditions before you leave Las Vegas. The route is covered in Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West.
