Route 66 to Grand Canyon West

Route 66 is an add-on to a Grand Canyon West trip, not a shortcut to the Skywalk. Here are the stops in Kingman, Hackberry, Peach Springs and Seligman and how to plan them.

Route 66 and Grand Canyon West: how they fit together

Historic Route 66 runs through Kingman and Peach Springs, both within reach of Grand Canyon West. The highway is not the usual way to the Skywalk, though. Day visitors drive US-93 and turn onto Pierce Ferry Road and Diamond Bar Road, so treat the old road as an extra leg of the trip. 2026 is the centennial year of Route 66, and Kingman has marked it with new displays.

If you only have one day at the rim, book your visit first and add the old highway later. Our guide to Grand Canyon West tours from Las Vegas shows the day-trip options. With two days, Kingman and Hackberry fit well on the second one.

Kingman: Arizona Route 66 Museum

The Arizona Route 66 Museum sits in the historic Powerhouse at 120 W. Andy Devine Avenue. It is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. The building was upgraded in 2025 with interactive kiosks and new murals for the centennial. Admission changes, so check the current price at the door.

Kingman's visitor center is a separate building on Andy Devine Avenue with its own hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and closed on some holidays. Do not plan the museum around the visitor center times.

Roadworks at the I-40 and US-93 interchange in Kingman continue, with a new tunnel open, lane restrictions and work by day and night. Completion is expected in 2027. This matters if your route runs through Kingman. Allow extra time and check traffic before you leave.

Hackberry General Store

The Hackberry General Store is a former gas station site that now works as a souvenir shop and museum stop. It lies 26 miles (42 km) east of Kingman on Historic Route 66, about 30 minutes by car. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in spring and summer and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in fall and winter, with no exact change dates. Do not count on it for fuel.

Peach Springs: the Hualapai town on Route 66

Peach Springs is the main town and administrative center of the Hualapai on Historic Route 66. It is also the base for river rafting, which checks in at a lodge desk at 900 Highway 66. Read our Grand Canyon rafting guide if that is your reason to go.

Keep Peach Springs and Grand Canyon West apart in your head. The lodge and the river base are about 2 hours from the West Rim. Peach Springs is not the address for a day visit: for the Skywalk, drive to the Grand Canyon West Airport address given in our driving guide from Las Vegas.

The town has a veterans memorial with a bronze sculpture, a stone trading post building and a historic white gas station, all along the old road. The lodge is closed on 26 November 2026 and operates normally again from 27 November 2026.

Seligman and the longer drive east

Seligman lies 87 miles (139 km) east of Kingman on Route 66. The town is known for a Route 66 gift shop and a classic roadside diner. For the longer stretch from Kingman to the end of Crookton Road near Ash Fork, 106 miles (170 km), allow 1.5 to 2 hours of pure driving, plus time at the stops. That is a trip of its own, not something to squeeze into a Skywalk day.

For most visitors, Kingman and Hackberry are the easiest stops to add. Choose Peach Springs if you are rafting, and Seligman only if you have a full extra day. If you want a night near the stops, see where to stay near Grand Canyon West. A longer loop through the state is covered in the Arizona road trip guide.

Fuel, heat and the long desert road

Distances in this part of Arizona are long. Fill your tank before you leave the highway, bring more water than you think you need and carry sun protection. Heat is a real risk in summer.

Fuel for the Skywalk drive is covered in Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West. Our weather guide has monthly temperatures if you are choosing when to go.
